Hi, welcome to my web log.
It includes news, photos, updates, new and in-progess work, and trivial pop-culture meanderings.

Retroactive Sneak Peek

Here is an after-the-fact-sneak-peek-close-up of the piece I made for my buddy Michael. We traveled across the country together two summers ago and, accordingly, we agreed his piece should be about the Grand Canyon (or Bryce... or some hybrid canyon). There he is below perched on an inspirational length of rock.

12.23.10

SNEAUX

I'm at my parents' house in Massachusetts where there is lots of sneaux.

I'm working on a commissioned piece for one of my very best friends in life, watching Goodfellas on the TV, mentally preparing not to lose my phone during another trip to the craft store. Mentally willing the cat to climb inside the semi-collapsed tube of plastic carpet packaging laying in the hallway.

Black Bart Simpson

Something happened to me this year which caused me to make 56 felt "Christmas ornaments" while listening to nonstop Christmas music on 106.7 lite fm / watching all the drug documentaries on Netflix instant play. Curious

Highly Typical Day

I found this AMAZING VHS at Salvation Army, just before losing my phone at the nearby and only Michael's (Arts and Crafts) in the city, a little while before discovering that the tape inside this box is in fact a Winnie The Pooh video. die

A Koole Booke

Had a real fun time and met some real cool folks at the launch of The Open Daybook at Printed Matter. "The Stupid Mail" has once again delayed the arrival of a highly anticipated item (a contributor-copy of the aforementioned book) so I finally just bought some at Printed Matter and got one all drawn up on by a cool Jason Polan, Victor Kerlow, Maya Hayuk combo. Alright!

See some pages of the book above. Thank you David P. Earle for inviting me to contribute! I feel like a lucky stowaway among the unreal group of artists inside, including Tim Barber, Luke Best, Matt Furie, Cody Hudson, Chris Johanson, Miranda July, Branden Koch, Julien Langendorff, Micah Lidberg, Travis Millard, Brendan Monroe, David Rakoff, Luke Ramsey, Martha Rich, The Royal Art Lodge, Aurel Schmidt, Mark Todd, Mark Warren Jaques, Megan Whitmarsh, and 346 some odd awesome others.

Open Daybook Launch at Printed Matter!

Come out to Printed Matter this Saturday for the NYC launch of The Open Daybook!
The piece I made for the book is Two Cats Under Goo. It represents August 21st, when the cat on a shirt I have met a nearly identical cat on the shirt of a new friend.

From editor David P. Earle:

-

Please join the artists of The Open Daybook to drink a toast to their work. Live spontaneous drawings by contributors Echo Eggebrecht, Victor Kerlow, Hope Gangloff, Jason Polan and Maya Hayuk.

The Open Daybook is both a compilation of original art work and perpetual daily calendar. Over the course of a single year, three hundred and sixty five artists were assigned a date and asked to make a work of art on that day.

Each artist’s day is a page in the book. But The Open Daybook is also an invitation for the owner to record his or her own day. The book can be used as a day planner, a journal or a daily sketchbook. As the owner of the book doodles, plans for the future and records the past, a second book is created, a collaboration in which each artist’s day becomes the owner’s day as well.

SICK GEAR

I FINALLY biked my shivering self over to the Pencil Factory to pick up some copies of Small Black's New Chain from the ever patient and enthusiastic Jon Coombs. I enjoyed my visit very much and returned with a veritable plethora of vinyls, 7"s and CDs. See:

VERY EXCITING

Maya Hayuk's Heavy Light at Cinders was and continues to be completely unreal!! See for reference: the above install photo, or the show itself in real life/space.

I made this flyer (below) of upcoming events at Cinders in conjunction with the show. Hotdoghamburger. Attendance strongly encouraged.

RISD XYZ

Just got the most recent issue of RISD XYZ in the mail, with my "play" illo on page 2. Also a lil' bio inside the cover with this picture of me drinking water:

UNRELATED:
I've been spending this week helping my new awesome studio mate Maya Hayuk (actually, I'm more her new studio mate (SEW EXCITING)) install her solo show at Cinders. I've always been totally in like with Cinders AND Maya's work, so I'm having way too much fun. The show is already looking like the very essence of radness. Be sure to come by for the opening this Saturday.

Fotos

O WOW I changed my whole website. Lots of new work everywhere. Another thing that is different is that I removed the photography page from the main menu and put it here instead. Let's be real, I'm not a photographer. But I do really like taking photos, so here they will be.

You can still go to that page by clicking here or on the image above, and see an assortment of other photos as I post them on the blogge. Also the photography page is now called Road Trip because... that's really all it is.

OKAY

Pixel-Macaulay, Day 19

ONE COLOR LEFT AHHHH. My right thumb is so sore from burnishing tape. I don't know what I'm going to do when this is over. Like brain-wise. Probably become severely unhinged.

Had to go check out Indian Head Farm's impressive annual display of carved, lit, home-grown pumpkins before heading back to Brooklyn tomorrow. Above is my favorite, the farm's resident steer perfectly gored into a gourd.

Brooklyn Group Show Opening Friday!

I have a new piece in this group show opening October 29th in Brooklyn. It should be rad! Here are the infos:

By Appointment or By Chance presents First Matter, curated by Lindsay Aveilhe: a group show featuring 8 artists whose artwork explore the ongoing fascination with alchemy, its iconography, its processes, its interpreted history and what art historian James Elkins, calls alchemy’s “models for understanding the contemporary aversion to full logical or rational sense.”

In the science of Alchemy, First Matter or the Materia Prima represents the invisible dark material of the primordial and is believed to be the substance from which all things derive. First Matter may be anything and may become anything.

Alchemy evolved as a means to explain the mysterious connection between the physical and the unknown – an attempt to link Primordial, God, and Man. The Alchemist’s primary mission was to find the philosophers' stone, a divine substance comprised from the transmutation of metals with First Matter into a gold, said to bestow those who possessed it with eternal youth, health, and enlightenment.

Handed down through the centuries from Egypt and Arabia to Greece and Rome, and finally to western and central Europe, alchemy’s ambitions and secret signs and symbols have been adapted and diffused and often erroneously reinterpreted into the fields of mysticism, magic, occult, new age spirituality, mythology, witchcraft and has paved the way for a wide array of modern scientific practice and industrial invention.

First Matter includes artists working in photography, sculpture, performance, video, computer art, drawing, painting and storytelling. Participating Artists:

Faten Kanaan
Kelli Miller
Ethan Cook
Kyle Cantrell
Lauren Luloff
Wesley Stokes
Andrew Garn

Sexi Pics Vol. 4

I just got a bunch of rolls of film back from Maine. Adam and I visited my awesome amazing grandparents, my fiercely righteous friend Alessandra and her wonderful Tom-Lily-Charlotte fam unit, and popular-senior-citizen-vacation-destination Acadia National Park. SEXI PICS ENSUED

Pixel-Macaulay, Day 14

Lots filled in! Ran out of red on the big mean red section. Left it sadly taped off like that until next week when I can put another coat on and peel 'er off. I'm going to have to fix his left pupil-pixel, which is too light. I also mistakenly filled in a pixel in his ear that should be orange. You know - problems, solutions.

-----------------------------------------------

09.28.10

Pixel-Macaulay, Day 13

I didn't get a whole lot done today, but I did tape off a big mean section of red. And I rode my bike through the damn rain.

Keep an eyeball peeled for the un-bitmapped version of this man falling off a cliff in Faesthetic # 13. It is the 10th anniversary issue, the theme is LUCK, and it will feature a white hot collection of arts. I'm very excited, be excited with me.

American Cancer Society!

YOUR SPIRIT GUIDE! ^^^^

The American Cancer Society asked a selection of artists to create wrapping paper designs for their More Birthdays campaign, and I'm way too excited to be among them. Each artist was to use a fact about the ACS as inspiration. The fact I chose states "Every year, the American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program helps guide thousands of cancer patients through every step of their journey." My piece shows a spirit guide composed of a chaotic mass of shapes and patterns, wearing a compass on a chain around the neck as a symbol and tool of his navigational powers.

You can see an in-progress detail above. The wrapping paper as well as posters and limited editions prints of the finished piece are available at the ACS's More Birthdays site, which just hit the 'net TODAY with fifteen launch artists and musicians, including Eric Carle, Mike Perry, Andrew Bannecker, Andy Gilmore, myself and others. Launch musicians include Justin Bieber and Devo.

Dahga Bloom

Just got this lil' buddy in the mail from Dahga Bloom, who wrote me a while back about using Pussing Donut Mushroom Cloud on the cover of their forthcoming album. The album is now OUT 4 U and can be ordered here, or picked up at numerous destinations around California.

The thing is a beast, definitely worth heavy rotation and your undivided attention, and I'm kind of a snob so I don't just go around saying stuff like that all willy nilly.

Pixel-Macaulay, Day 6

Only took one blurry photo today. This is where I'm at... you know... digitally. The graph shows the number of pixels filled in per column. It lines up with the image because I've been too lazy to spend a lot of time on the ladder working on higher parts of the wall.

MINTY NU CHAIN

Small Black's forthcoming album New Chain announced today on Pitchfork.

Finished up the album art a couple weeks ago now, super happy with how it came together. If the last one was a great lake, this one is a great pool, with coveted pool toys sparkling at the bottom like precious gems. Definitely one of my favorite projects this year, and always the best dudes to work with. Such a seamless meshing of vibes, just real tru deep mondo-vibes.

Feel it on October 26 / JagJaguwar.

SHIT-HOUSES: A New Era

I've been working (read: sweating) on these two pieces all month for a group show this month at Gallery Hijinks in San Francisco. Finally sent them off today... yessssssssssss. Not wanting to ruin any anticipation for the show but also wanting to hype these buddies, here are two "sneak peak" close-ups.

Super excited to be showing with this cast of characters... press release soon.

AMOS: Showtime

Just sent off my cover for Amos' forthcoming release Showtime. Here is the project's website showing other artists' renditions. Pretty sweet!!!!!! See KT54's blog for a more in-depth explanation of this international endeavor.

Perhaps you have noticed that I am retroactively updating this blogge (it is now actually August 5th, 2010 aka the future!) Why am I having so much trouble keeping these net vibes fresh and lively? Well, my computer is really hot and I've been super busy with things that will eventually show up here, so just TAKE IT EASY.

Why haven't I been using my rat tail as a paintbrush all along? I feel so dumb for not thinking of this before.

Probably I will post a bunch of this kind of picture, and it will get very boring because this doesn't look like anything and won't for a long while. But when it does, it sure will.

Paper Spaceship Feature

Thanks to all who came out to the opening at the Knitting Factory this past Thursday. I was only able to stick around long enough to drink a beer before shooting over to Tribeca for Elana Adler's opening (which was awesome.)

I nabbed the current issue of Paper-Spaceship as we were leaving, which includes work by the artists in the show as well as interviews with Daniel Buyanovsky and myself, and a fold-out poster I designed for the issue. Below, you can see:

SNEEKPEEK: poster of ambiguous scientific objects.

In other un-news, it has been stupifyingly hot for the last week +. Clothes cannot be too few. Does a routine of not sleeping and taking an average of three cold showers a day turn a person into a psychopath? Was this part of Travis Bickle's daily regimen? What about Meursault's? Luckily I don't think either of them subsisted mainly on watermelon and frozen mango, so I think that should be enough of a distinction to set me apart from the murdering kind of psychopath. And now back to work on my night-vision telescopic lens.

06.20.10

Bad Lover

Check out Small Black's newest video for Bad Lover! I made the intro Small Black gif and painted a couple of the masks - my first time since kindergarten! But hopefully not the last... long live Bongozz.

"Post-bran DMT"

Photo (minus the writing) by William Covintree

I have an interview up at Paper Spaceship. It may read a little half-hearted... but really it was just late at night. And no, Mom, I've never done DMT.

I spent the last two weeks working at Aurora Robson's studio, and for the next two weeks I'll be working on a new series for an upcoming show in Dallas. More on that and a bunch of other fun stuff soon!

On a more somber note, last night I lost my most awesome hat (see above). It hurts so bad.

E-Z Media Grabs

Today at the Worcester Goodwill, sum e-z media grabs:

Hall and Oats "Big Bam Boom"
The Wonder Years (The Original Pilot (Kevin Arnold, on his first day of school at RFK Junior High, finds himself in trouble with a teacher and sharing a heartbreaking evening with Winnie Cooper, the girl next door) and Swinger (Kevin and Paul's Physical Education teacher has started teaching a new subject - Sex Education))
L.L. Cool J "Around The Way Girl"
Young M.C. "Principal's Office"
Enuff Z' Nuff "New Thing"
DAS EFX "Dead Serious"

Walked an hour across town and along the train tracks to the West Street Station consignment shop to find that it was closed. Had to call mom to pick me up.

05.17.10

I'm home in Berlin this week.

So far I've watched Billy Madison on TV as well as a show about meat, snooped around in the basement, looked through the same box of old photos for the thousandth time, and discovered that my childhood room has been turned into a den for grow lights and their fledgling plants.

It always makes me really sad to come home and find that the outside world of strip malls and chain restaurants has further encroached on my sleepy, rural farm town. This time when I pointed out that Risi's package store looked vacated and had a "STORE CLOSED" sign in the window, my mom explained that the building was going to be flattened and the whole "lot" (a vast expanse of green meadow streching between us and the detestable mall) developed. GLOOM!!!!!! The world of my dusty, barefoot childhood is being buldozed to make way for shopping centers and housing developments. It is immensely depressing.

-----------------------------------------------

04.30.10

Peanut Surprise!

Got this big box full of packing peanuts in the mail today from Sezio.

Inside was a beautiful 12" x 12" birch panel, one of twenty sent out to the artists participating in Sezio's upcoming group show at Subtext Gallery in June. The box also came with sick vibez.

04.27.10

Psych-Hub

Just finished this "metal canvas" for the Landfill Art Project. Cool! Unfortunately I now have a small mound of peeled blue tape to add to a landfill instead, but hey win some lose some RIGHT?!!!!!!! Maybe I'll make a big Marge Simpson doll out of it.

1992 @ Tank Theory

HI. Guess what, much like 1970 You can now buy 1992 as a shirt at Tank Theory except it's going by the name "1980." Close enough I guess, and what a couple of decades they were. Hammer time.

Now on to what I really want to discuss: Blank Check, in which our protagonist under the pseudonym "Macintosh" first uses his million dollars to order a truck of Chips Ahoy to his new suburban castle. Preston goes bigger than Big, keeps it way more "real" than Richie Rich and is totally cooler than First Kid, though this movie really begs for a sweet Macaulay / Sinbad pairing. However, after further analysis we can conclude that if this had happened, there would have been no point in making any movies at all after that. And with that we will conclude this blogge post.

MIAMI Group Show

I am showing the Happy and Sad Pyramids and the Pussing Donut Mushroom Cloud in this show opening on Saturday. All those in Miami and its general vicinity are expected to attend.
The press release:

Crystal: completely transparent & unclouded.

Monolith: a geological feature such as a mountain, consisting of a single massive stone or rock, or a single piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument. In this case, the monolith represents the artist.

The idea of the group show is to showcase contemporary artists whose work is of a clear distinct voice and technical execution. In a sense, the crystal monolith is a metaphor for the artist. Each one, in this show, demonstrate a self-less dedication to the larger visual voice they express.

Exhibiting Artists:

Jose Mertz
Johnny Robles
Ivanco Talevski
Charlie Immer
Morgan Blair
Destroy Rock City
Francesco LoCastro
Reinier Gamboa

Bombay Sapphire Bottle

Finished bottle above. AWESOME crew hang time at the Tokion event last night, thanks buddies for coming and helping me with the free dranx. To you solid troopers who came after it was gone... I am deeply sorry for luring you under an apparently false pretense! I too thought the cutoff was at 10, and remain outraged. And to the two girls walking ahead of us on the way back to the subway who were showered in shredded paper confetti from a bag we took from the curb... sorry.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meet: WINNERS PRESS

Wow. "Just" (two months ago, long story) got these zines in the mail from Paul Windle of Winners! Press. Obviously they are TOO RAD!! Go check out their site, it looks like they are up to some really good stuff. Definitely keep an eye on Winners! The zine slingazzz.

Acquisition of zines made possible by the patient Nick-current-resident-of-our-old-apartment for graciously holding on to our mail as it piled up in their much more thoughtfully arranged/decorated apartment. We were not such thoughtful other-people's-mail-recipients. Eek karma! Luckily he knew an awesome looking package possibly containing zines when he saw one, tracked me down, and here we have them.

Why not treat yourself to some fresh content: Winners! Press.
Go ahead, you're worth it. You deserve it you winner.

New Drawings! And VHS's.

Uhhhh... a real goldmine at a Queens Goodwill and another nearby thrift store. Vacation (FINALLY!) completes my National Lampoon collection, excluding of course the most recent iterations (ugh!). Waiting for Guffman rounds out the Christopher Guest body, too. The ambiguous "video casette" just says "LAST EPISODES: SEINFELD/CHEERS" on the tape, so... yes. I didn't even look twice at Kool & the Gang, just grabbed it off the shelf. Same with Big and Heathers. Big will go next to Honey I Shrunk The Kids, as they both have that one kid (Tom Hank's friend Billy in Big, the neightbor kid with the red hat and the 'tude in HISTK.) Adam suggested the Faith No More video (Live at the Brixton Accademy, London, 1990), and think it's gonna be a real special flick.

Relating to art: A bunch of new drawings in the aptly titled "Drawings" section. Modified Scenes From My VHS Collection.

VHS

WOW completely epic Goodwill VHS jackpot today. Let's forget about art for now and talk about these gems. Actually nevermind, I think they speak for themselves, talk amongst yourselves.

Regarding work and art, if you can tear yourself away from the cover of Fat Boys...
Days spent assisting at Mark Fox's studio, evenings working on flyers, totz, and a new series of small drawings. And peeling glue off my fingers on the subway platform.

Giffed

It is a sad day as I reluctantly switch my flashing gif index page with my recent works page. Now when you come to my website you go straight to the work and forgo the assault of pastel, epileptic gifs. Now these gifs can be found through the Morgan Blair starry rainbow gif at the upper left corner of every page. Borrrringggg... We'll see what effect this has on the bounce rate. DON'T YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CLICK ONCE AND IT TAKES YOU INTO THE WEBSITE.

ughhhhhhhhhdklh

I might change it back. Worst day ever!

Okay that didn't work at all I changed it back.
